Second-graders at Rhame Avenue School have been learning about where they are located in their town, state, country and world, using different types of maps and an assortment of texts, including the book “Me on the Map,” written by Joan Sweeney.

As part of the learning process, students engaged in innovative and interactive Smart Board activities in which they had to label continents and oceans on a world map. Teachers also utilized Google Earth to provide students with maps and images to reinforce the social studies unit material. The classes recently participated in a culminating activity, creating their very own “Me on the Map” flip books with their peers. Students created pages with drawn pictures of themselves and their homes. They also had to identify images that represented their town, state, country and continent and add them to the corresponding pages identified by their teachers.
