Fifth-grade students in ToniAnn Donald’s class at Centre Avenue got to know their fellow classmates better during an activity orchestrated as part of the district’s Focus on Diversity Week.

During the lesson, students broke into pairs and interviewed each other about their likes and dislikes, creating a Dubble Bubble Thinking Map to reflect what they had learned. After the Thinking Map was complete, the students shared what they learned about each other with the rest of the class.

In addition to the class activity, the students took part in schoolwide events that celebrated diversity, including contributing to an “I Am” Diversity wall. Each student reflected on a word they felt described them and wrote it on a colored index card. All of the cards were displayed together in the school’s hallway. The children also interviewed their families about their heritage and shared what they learned with their classmates.

ENL teacher Caitlin Castellano helped to organized the school’s events and spoke about the significance of celebrating diversity.

“We want our students to know that we are all part of the East Rockaway team and we’re a community,” she said.
