Rhame Avenue first-graders in Deborah Ferrato’s and Eileen Hiller’s classes participated in a STEAM snowman-building contest before the holiday break.

Prior to the lesson, the students listened to several snowman stories. They then were challenged to build the tallest snowman they could make in 30 minutes using small and large marshmallows and toothpicks. Before they began building, students used paper and a pencil to create a snowman design, then worked in groups to plan a team design.

After the allotted time elapsed, students reflected on what worked and what didn’t in their construction. They then wrote a creative piece about their snowman’s adventures. According to Ms. Ferrato, the activity helped students develop critical thinking and engineering skills.
