East Rockaway Junior-Senior High School hosted the VEX IQ State Qualifying tournament on Dec. 9, for the second consecutive year.

More than 30 teams from 10 different school districts participated, including five teams from East Rockaway. The day was filled with spirited competition and learning.

Presented by the Robotics Education & Competition Foundation, the VEX IQ Challenge is a new STEM program for elementary and middle school students between ages 8-14. Students, with guidance from their teachers and mentors, build a robot using the VEX IQ robotics platform to solve an engineering challenge presented in the form of a game. The teams work together to score points in teamwork matches and display their robots’ skills individually in driver-controlled and autonomous skills challenges.

In addition to building robots, the VEX IQ Challenge encourages students to actively learn about science, technology, engineering and mathematics with a STEM-themed research project that consists of a written or media presentation.
