Village of East Rockaway Mayor Bruno Romano visited East Rockaway’s football team prior to a recent scrimmage against West Hempstead High School.

Mayor Romano, who discussed the importance of hard work with the student-athletes, is one of a series of guest speakers planned to address the team as the coaching staff promotes its living “Above the Line” program.

The “Above the Line” program came to fruition last spring, after football coach Dan Vito shared the book “Above the Line: Lessons in Leadership and Life from a Champion Season,” written by Ohio State head football coach Urban Meyer. The coaching staff and team members read the book, and on June 6, the coaches held a presentation for parents and players on the philosophy of “building men for life” based upon Meyer’s book, along with “Inside Out Coaching” by Joe Ehrmann and “Season of Life: A Football Star, a Boy, a Journey to Manhood” by Jeffrey Marx.

The presentation resulted in an exciting start to this football season, as the team has committed to participate on and off the field on establishing a culture of living “above the line.”
