A new course elective is preparing seventh-grade students at East Rockaway Junior-Senior High School for college and careers.

The College and Career Experience class is based on the Advanced Via Individual Determination program curriculum, which heightens middle school students’ academic and social-emotional readiness for success through a variety of strategies and activities.

According to Principal Joseph Spero, the nationally recognized, research-based program has a proven track record of improved student achievement. Spero said the district learned about the program from the Long Island Consortium for Equity and Excellence and felt it would benefit the school’s students.

“The AVID program is a good fit for our students, helping them to rise to the challenge of being held accountable to the highest standards,” said Spero. “The reading resources and tutorials, where college students come and help our students, will have a great impact on their education.”
The program also offers a wide range of resources across content areas to help develop critical thinking, literacy and math skills.
