East Rockaway Junior-Senior High School’s annual homecoming/Louis Cosenza scholarship game will be held Sept. 24 at East Rockaway High School. The Rocks will take the field against Oyster Bay at 2 p.m. Proceeds of the game will benefit the Louis Cosenza Scholarship Fund, which is presented to a senior who excels in the classroom and on the athletic field.

This scholarship is awarded in memory of Louis Cosenza, who was a health and physical education teacher at East Rockaway High School in 1971 when he was stricken with leukemia at 31 years of age. Cosenza was an outstanding teacher, class advisor and coach. He taught at East Rockaway for six years.

Cosenza also excelled in sports, earning a full scholarship to Adelphi University for soccer, where he also played baseball. In addition to his athletic prowess, he was an honor student throughout high school and college. He later played minor league baseball for the St. Louis Cardinals before entering the teaching field.

Aside from being a top scholar-athlete, Cosenza was a role model to his students and his colleagues. In 1977, the Louis Cosenza Scholarship Fund was created in his name to benefit a top scholar-athlete, male or female, at East Rockaway High School.

Donations can be sent to East Rockaway High School, 443 Ocean Ave., East Rockaway, NY 11518 in care of the Louis Cosenza Scholarship Fund. Checks can be made out to East Rockaway High School.
