East Rockaway Celebrates Unity Day

The student body at Rhame Avenue celebrated Unity Day by wearing orange and taking part in a special Unity Tree art project to show they were united for kindness, acceptance and inclusion.

During the art activity, students dipped their thumbs in paint and transferred their fingerprints onto a tree created by art teacher Beth Brody. Their prints, “leaves” on the tree, signified the unity of the entire school community.

Organized by school social worker Dawn McCabe, the project coincided with National Bullying Prevention Month. The Unity Tree was framed and was placed in the school’s library for the remainder of the school year.

East Rockaway School District faculty recognized Unity Day by wearing orange. A variety of other activities to bring attention to bullying prevention also took place throughout the district.
