Students Learn to Checkmate

East Rockaway Junior-Senior High School students are learning to play chess thanks to the school’s new chess club.

In all, more than 30 students in grades 7-12 have joined the club, which meets after school. Chess club adviser Gus Baco said the weekly meetings are flexible to accommodate students’ busy schedules. Currently, the club members are participating in an intra squad tournament based on their level of play. Baco’s goal is that in time the students will gain enough experience and skill to play against other schools’ clubs.
