Alum Shares Business Experiences with Students
During Career Week, East Rockaway alum Shaun Beymolla and his wife Kimberly visited Meridyth Hansen’s AP Statistics and College math classes to talk about their business and the work it took to achieve success.

The couple, who own a Kona Ice franchise, explained the importance of both numeracy and literacy skills when it came to owning and operating their own business. Students learned about different types of marketing strategies and were given Hawaiian leis, wristbands, business cards and advertising brochures to illustrate some of the tools that Kona Ice uses to differentiate their business. The students were particularly interested in how franchise systems worked both legally and financially.

Shaun and Kim discussed the importance of networking, being part of the community that you want to succeed in, and explained the different types of businesses and models they operate, including a concession stand, mobile truck, kiosk and mini cart. Students were able to ask questions about profits, revenue, fundraising percentages and overhead. The students loved listening to the speakers and were engaged in learning about all the effort and skill that is put into achieving a meaningful career.
