Board Acknowledges Essay Writers and Athletes

East Rockaway student-athletes and the winners of the Andrew Stern Memorial Essay Contest were honored by the Board of Education during its meeting on Jan. 24.

The evening began with Board members, along with Hempstead Town Councilman Anthony D’Esposito, honoring the East Rockaway Junior-Senior High School girls volleyball team for being named Long Island champions and making it to the final four of the state championship. Councilman D’Esposito presented the girls with citations and congratulated them on their “tremendous season.”

The meeting continued with the winning students of the Andrew Stern Memorial Essay Contest sharing their written submissions with those in attendance. Congratulations to East Rockaway Junior-Senior High School junior Andrew Schwarzman (high school category), seventh-grader Jason Miller (middle school category) and Centre Avenue School fifth-grade student Angelina Palma (elementary school category). Members of the Stern family were in attendance to congratulate the students.

East Rockaway Junior-Senior High School’s Scholar-Athlete teams were also recognized as was junior, Kevin Howard who received the Section VIII Cross- Country Sportsmanship Award.  

The presentation portion of the meeting concluded with East Rockaway Junior-Senior High School Principal Joseph Spero providing information on the school’s Advanced Via Individual Determination program curriculum.
