Chinese New Year at Centre Avenue

Centre Avenue School kindergarten classes celebrated Chinese New Year by parading through the school’s hallways dressed as a dragon, and adorned in other colorful, traditional costumes.

During the festivities, students played drums to keep “Nian,” a beast according to Chinese mythology, away. They also wore hats and necklaces that they created for the celebration.

Prior to the parade, they also created colorful masks, paper fortune cookies and lanterns to bring in the “Year of the Rooster.” They also read “Lion Dancer: Ernie Wan’s Chinese New Year” and “D is for Dragon Dance” by Ying Chang Compestine. Kindergarten teachers Brianne Dooley and Linda Grace taught students about Chinese customs, traditions and Chinatown. In addition, they discussed how the moon relates to Chinese New Year and how the years are named. The kindergartners used Circle Thinking Maps to brainstorm all of the information they learned about Chinese New Year.
