Robots Come to Life at Rhame Avenue

Students at Rhame Avenue are building and will learn to program robots as part of the district’s elementary STEAM (science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics) program.

Under the direction of STEAM teacher Michelle Healy and their classroom teachers, students are constructing robots out of Lego Mindstorms. Working in groups, they search for the correct pieces to use, read the necessary instructions and build their robot according to the specs provided. Once the building phase is complete, they will program their robots to complete a variety of tasks, such as moving forward and backward, making 360 degree turns and saying “hello.”

According to Healy, the robotic unit allows students to collaborate with each other and emphasizes the importance of communication. The district’s elementary STEAM program began with students learning to code. Once the robotics unit is complete, the students will begin working on MakerSpaces.
