Physical Science Students Study Motion and Force

East Rockaway eighth-graders in Alexandra Mendyk’s physical science class created their own roller coasters to demonstrate Newton's three laws of motion and various principles about force.

Students were required to design safe, reliable coasters that contained at least one loop, one uphill and one downhill region. In addition, the designs demonstrated changes in speed and acceleration, areas of friction, force, gravity and inertia. Students tested their designs with marbles, timed the overall "ride" of their coasters and had to problem solve in order to get their roller coaster to perfectly function.
