First-grade students at Rhame Avenue delivered outstanding performances when they took part in the school play, “A New Nation.”

The play took the audience on a journey that started with the Native Americans and Christopher Columbus to the settlement of the 13 colonies. It continued with the Boston Tea Party, Paul Revere's ride and concluded with the nation’s independence. Many of the students created their own costumes and even took part in writing parts of the play.

They have been discovering facts about United States history in social studies through the use of the Engage NY model, A New Nation. Aside from the events highlighted in the play, they also learned about pilgrims, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, Betsy Ross and the King of England. The students reinforced their learning through poetry, song and performing.
