Joyce Kenny's social studies classes at East Rockaway Junior-Senior High School used a new AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) strategy as part of learning content-specific vocabulary in a unit on the first United States presidents. This strategy included the use of Total Physical Response.

Students created physical motions to help them remember key terms and people from the unit. Then each group taught their classmates the physical motions to the key terms and people. Students were also given the choice to draw a picture or write an example of the word. The lesson was successful and the needs of students of multiple learning styles were met.
