Students at Centre Avenue enjoyed spending time with grandparents, aunts, uncles and others when the school hosted Special Visitors Day on May 12.

The event, one of many planned by the school’s Positive School Culture committee, encouraged students to invite someone special to their class. During the visit, the students’ guests had an opportunity to experience what the children are learning. They also took part in many engaging activities.

Many of the classroom lessons focused on “Spaghetti in a Hot Dog Bun: Having the Courage To Be Who You Are,” a book which inspires students to be proud of themselves. Principal Sherry Ma said the book is one of four character education stories that students read with their classes this year.

“These book selections encourage students to accept each other’s differences and empowers them to make good choices,” Ma said.

Other activities included sixth-graders showing off the science research they conducted and fifth-graders teaching their guests to create Thinking Maps. There was also music, as younger students expressed their love for their grandparents by singing, “A Song for Grandma and Grandpa.”
