Rhame Avenue School Principal Erik Walter and East Rockaway Junior-Senior High School senior Peter Wilson were celebrated during the Board of Education meeting on Nov. 21.

Mr. Walter received a proclamation from New York State Senator Todd Kaminsky for saving two young girls who were struggling to stay afloat in the water at Edwards Boulevard Beach in Long Beach on Sept. 23.

“We all try to do what’s best when we know people are looking, when we are being evaluated, when our superiors are there, when we want to impress someone, but how you do when something unexpected happens right in front of you really shows and reveals your character immediately,” Sen. Kaminsky said.

Superintendent of Schools Lisa Ruiz also commended Mr. Walter, describing him as a “truly selfless person.”

Wilson was recognized for being added to the junior-senior high school’s Mathematics Wall of Excellence. This honor is bestowed upon students who meet rigorous criteria, including receiving above an 85 on all mathematics Regents exams, a minimum cumulative average of 90 in all high school math courses and above a 95 on at least one math Regents exam. In addition, the student had to demonstrate the ability to think logically, justify mathematical concepts, and persist in solving complex mathematical questions and reason analytically. After meeting the criteria, the student is asked to write an essay describing how math has had an impact on his or her life.

“Peter has not only met the criteria, but surpassed it,” math teacher Deanna Mignella said. “He has a genuine enthusiasm for learning. His love of mathematics is palpable, he truly enjoys solving problems, understanding theorems and making connections to his existing knowledge.”

After the recognition, STEAM teacher Michelle Healy presented information about the district’s STEAM program with the assistance of elementary students, who shared their love for the program.
