East Rockaway Junior-Senior High School students in Frank Altamore’s, Mary Beth Palazzolo’s and Donna Smith’s geometry classes recently began a unit on similarity and 3-D geometry by turning their smartphones into a 3-D hologram.

They students used their knowledge of constructions to construct an isosceles trapezoid, cut four of them out of transparency film and taped them together to form a truncated pyramid. When this figure was placed on a smartphone with a special video playing, the “hologram” appeared above the phone.

Students were then given the assignment to use their knowledge of dilations to make a larger-scaled pyramid that could be used with the larger screen on their school tablets.
