Second-grade students at Centre Avenue School received an exciting visit from Iggy, a Labrador retriever who is a working guide dog. During the event, students learned how dogs are trained to help visually impaired individuals and the mechanisms that are used while a dog is working.

Iggy’s owner Joan Lee, who is blind, represented the Guide Dog Foundation and educated students on how Iggy assists her in navigating various obstacles. Lee added that she also had to acquire certain skills in order to maintain a strong bond with a guide dog. This includes learning how to use the guide dog harness and learning various dog commands, which she demonstrated to students.

Students also enjoyed a reading of “Guide Dog, Guide Dog,” a book written by students of the Locust Valley Central School District.
