The Board of Education had an eventful night at its June meeting with a variety of recognitions to close the 2018-2019 school year. Class of 2019’s valedictorian Laura Millar and salutatorian Scott Buzzolani, as well as outgoing board members and district retirees were celebrated during the meeting.

The board said their final farewells to board trustee Patricia Nicoletti and Vice President Kristin Ochtera, who will no longer be serving as board members. District staff, administration and members of the board commended them for their hard work and years of service to the community.

East Rockaway Junior-Senior High School Principal Richard Schaffer presented the five retirees from the school, which include Catherine Corapi, Barbara Gerber, Joe Lores, Brigid Mulvaney and Mary Beth Palazzolo. Rhame Avenue Elementary School Principal Erik Walter also announced the school’s two retirees, Ann Chiaffitelli and Darlene Woods.

“On behalf of our Board of Education, I wish our retirees a long, health and happy retirement,” Superintendent of Schools Lisa Ruiz said. “We thank you all for the many years of service to the children of our community and for the joy that your teaching and your support has brought to our schools throughout the years.”

Superintendent Ruiz also presented Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations Jacqueline Scrio for tenure to the board of education. Mrs. Scrio was lauded for her commitment and dedication to the district and community. For this recognition, Mrs. Scrio was presented with flowers and a gift.

The night ended with the district’s annual PTA installation ceremony for the new officers of each of the school’s PTA units.
