Sixth-graders in Kassie Tillem-Spero’s class at Rhame Avenue School used a triple beam balance and the water displacement method to find the mass and volume of fruits and vegetables as a culminating activity to their science unit on density.

Equipped with avocados, bananas, yellow peppers, cucumbers and many more healthy treats, students worked together in pairs to find the volume and mass of their objects. They then calculated the density for each. Ms. Tillem-Spero orchestrated the activities to provide students with an opportunity to utilize the practical skills they learned. The students had a lot of fun as they engaged in the hands-on lessons.
