Brianna Manzano, a third grader at Centre Avenue School, was one of 10 students nationwide selected as a winner of the Storyworks Magazine’s volcano writing contest.

Students read Lauren Tarshis’ Scholastic article, “Beauty and Disaster,” and studied text features to gain a richer understanding of the volcanic eruptions at Hawaii’s Mount Kilauea last year. Inspired, Brianna used imagery and detail to write and submit her piece for the contest, which asked students to imagine if they were there.

Each student-winner received a copy of Tarshis’ book “I Survived the Eruption of Mount St. Helens, 1980.”

The district congratulates Brianna on this tremendous accomplishment.
