The Junior Senior High School hosted the Vex IQ Robotics “Squared Away” Tournament. Approximately 125 children from 15 different schools and organizations participated. Elementary and middle school teams built and coded robots that could complete this year's challenge, which was to strategically move and stack cubes and balls to score the maximum amount of points per one-minute round.
East Rockaway elementary students finished 13th overall in their first competition of the year. East Rockaway coach Mr. Nick Cimorelli is extremely impressed with this team as it was their first experience building and programming the Vex robot.
“Six weeks ago, they started with a pile of individual parts, and for them to place so high, is quite an accomplishment,” he said.
Future tournaments will be held in the upcoming months at different schools. They will provide more opportunities for East Rockaway students to employ engineering principles, continually improve their robots, and experience success.
