The East Rockaway Middle School Robotics team, coached by CTE Instructor Nick Cimorelli and assisted by teacher Hugh Howard, competed at the VEX IQ competition on Dec. 15 at Elwood Middle School.
Ten school districts and 31 robotic teams competed at the event. East Rockaway entered five teams, consisting of students in grades 6-8. Three of those teams qualified for the final round. Daniel Ricci and Elizabeth Son captured first place in the teamwork challenge, working together with a team from Elwood.
The students are looking forward to three more competitions culminating with the state qualifier, to be held at East Rockaway Junior-Senior High School on Feb. 11. The top teams will go on to compete in the national competition, to be held in Iowa in April.
