East Rockaway Junior-Senior High School social worker Amy Weissman recently held the last session of the “Beautiful Me” program with several of the school’s seventh-grade students.

Each student was provided with a compliment box, construction paper and markers and encouraged to identify and write a meaningful, genuine and honest compliment for each member of the group. The girls shared their praise with each other and practiced accepting polite expressions, with appropriate eye contact and consistent body language.

At the end of the session, the girls received a heart-shaped necklace from Jackie Hance of the Hance Family Foundation. The organization was founded to honor the lives of Jackie’s children Emma, Allyson and Katie, who died in a car accident in 2009.

“Beautiful Me” provides a safe space for girls to explore and share and improves self-esteem through intricate and expertly taught activities. If you would like your daughter to participate in a group please contact your school’s social workers. To learn more about the program, visit the website at
