East Rockaway Music Department Competes in Boston
The East Rockaway Music Department participated in its annual
competition trip on April 20 – 22nd. While in Boston, the students
participated in the Festivals of Music competition and clinics. This is
the first year that the Senior Chorus has participated, making it a true
department-wide experience. The students had a wonderful experience and
look forward to continuing this annual tradition next year.
Natalia Cuttitta, who performed on piano with the Senior Chorus, won the
award for Best Student Accompanist of the entire festival.
The Celebration of Music Continues
East Rockaway students continue to celebrate Music in Our Schools month, sharing their knowledge and love of music with classmates.
At Centre Avenue, Mr. Soto's class researched composers and created documents in Google drawings that are on display outside the music room. Meanwhile on St. Patrick’s Day, chorus students were visited by a bagpiper and kindergartners danced to Irish music. Several students also played their instruments for their classmates throughout the month.
At Rhame Avenue, students also demonstrated their musical skills, playing their respective instruments for their friends.
Students Learn to Turn Music to Meals
East Rockaway Junior-Senior High School band and orchestra students learned about the Harry Chapin Practice-a-Thon, "Turning Music 2 Meals for the Hungry" when Peggy Rakas, the Harry Chapin practice-a-thon coordinator for Long Island visited their school on March 8.
During the month of March, musicians across New York State are invited to take part in a Practice-a-Thon with all proceeds going to local food banks. Last year, the event raised $23,000 for food banks on Long Island and this year, with involvement from East Rockaway and students across the state, they hope to raise much more. The Practice-a-thon is a wonderful way to strengthen students’ practice habits while encouraging empathy and teaching them that their actions can make a difference.
Music in Our Schools Month
March is Music in Our Schools month and students from East Rockaway will participate in a variety of activities.
Throughout the month, students will enjoy morning announcements about music. On Mondays a music word will be highlighted, on Tuesdays an instrument, fun facts on Wednesday, musicians on Thursdays and jokes on Fridays. Students are invited to bring instruments to play and music to listen to in their music classes. Music lessons will be based on student input.
In addition, sixth-grade music students will visit the high school for Music Orientation with the band, chorus and orchestra. They will be treated to music icebreaker activities, full ensemble rehearsals and performances.
The year’s theme for Music in Our School’s month is “Music Inspires.” Students will talk about their feelings about music with their classmates. Several will perform for their class, take part in fun activities and share favorite songs.
New York State School Music Association students are beginning to prepare their solos and sight-reading for the June 2 and 3 NYSSMA Festival at Malverne High School.
A special thanks to Mr. Soto’s sixth-grade class at Centre Avenue for creating posters about various composers and musicians to display on the bulletin board outside the music room.
Senior Chorus Attends Workshop with Hofstra Director
East Rockaway Junior-Senior High School’s senior chorus participated in a choral workshop led by Hofstra University’s Director of Choral Activities Dr. David Fryling on Nov. 29 at the high school.
Dr. Fryling worked with senior chorus students on their musical selections for the winter concert. The workshop was a success and the East Rockaway Music Department looks forward to ongoing collaborations with Hofstra University’s music faculty. The senior chorus shared their work at the winter concert on Dec. 14.
