Anne Smyth’s third grade class and Marie Lyon’s fourth grade class at Centre Avenue recently gathered to share their personal narrative writing assignments.
Several weeks prior to the celebration, students selected a topic based on an event that changed their life. They then worked on all the components of the writing process, including brainstorming and organizing ideas, drafting, revising and proofreading. The students and their classmates assisted each other with editing before submitting their final copy to their teacher.
According to Smyth, the activity was aimed at bolstering students’ writing and vocabulary. She indicated that students used thinking maps to organize their ideas for their rough drafts.
