Centre Avenue celebrates reading with creative Literacy Pumpkin Contest

Centre Avenue Elementary School recently wrapped up its annual Literacy Pumpkin Contest, showcasing the creativity and literary passion of both students and staff members who transformed ordinary pumpkins into beloved book characters.
The contest, which encourages students to engage with literature in a fun and artistic way, saw participants create pumpkin masterpieces inspired by their favorite storybook characters. From classic children's tales to contemporary favorites, the decorated pumpkins demonstrated the school community's enthusiasm for reading.
Leading by example, Centre Avenue Elementary staff members impressed judges with their detailed character recreations. Michelle Picciolo brought the dynamic duo from Monsters, Inc. to life with her Mike and Sully pumpkin display. Mary Boll captured hearts with her interpretation of Hodge the Hedgehog, while Daisy Pendergrass paid homage to the beloved house-elf with her Dobby-themed creation.
The student competition featured impressive entries that highlighted young readers' connections to their favorite stories.
Carter Paul claimed first place with a creative Marshmallow Man pumpkin that wowed the judges. Jack Perdomo and Aaron Diaz secured second place with their colorful Cocomelon-inspired pumpkin. The competition for third place resulted in a tie, with Ryder Proulx's Freddy pumpkin and Grace Crenshaw's If You Give a Mouse a Cookie pumpkin both earning recognition for their creativity and craftsmanship.
The Literacy Pumpkin Contest continues to be a cherished tradition at Centre Avenue, combining seasonal festivity with the school's commitment to fostering a love of reading.
