East Rockaway Educator Cheryl Poland Named Woman of Distinction

Assemblywoman Judy Griffin has recognized East Rockaway Jr/Sr High School special education teacher and girls varsity basketball coach Ms. Cheryl Poland as a Woman of Distinction. Ms. Poland was honored at a ceremony on Nov. 6 at Baldwin Middle School.
The recognition celebrates Ms. Poland's nearly three decades of service to East Rockaway Jr/Sr High School where she is also an alumna. After earning her degree in education from Monmouth University and a Master of Science in Sports Medicine from LIU Brooklyn, Ms. Poland returned to her hometown to shape the lives of countless students.
As a special education teacher, Ms. Poland has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to ensuring every student reaches their potential. On the basketball court, where she leads the girls varsity team, she has earned widespread recognition for her leadership and the lasting positive impact she has had on her student athletes, helping them develop not only as competitors but as confident young women.
Ms. Poland's dedication to East Rockaway extends beyond the classroom and gymnasium. Together with her husband, Don Poland – a history teacher at the high school – and their three children, the Poland family has become synonymous with community service and school spirit.
The Woman of Distinction honor reflects what the East Rockaway community has long known: Ms. Poland's influence reaches far beyond lesson plans and game strategies. She has spent her career investing in the growth, success and well-being of East Rockaway students.
East Rockaway UFSD congratulates Ms. Poland on this well-deserved recognition and thanks her for her extraordinary dedication to the district and its students.
