Centre Avenue Kindergarteners and First Graders Learn Train Safety from LIRR

Kindergarteners and first graders at Centre Avenue School got a lesson in train safety last week when a Long Island Railroad representative visited the school for an assembly in the multipurpose room.
The first half of the program focused on key safety rules students should always follow around trains and at train stations. The LIRR representative walked students through nine essential guidelines: staying close to adults; standing behind the yellow line until all passengers have exited; giving tickets to the conductor; not disturbing the engineer; crossing only at designated train crossings and never over the tracks; waiting if crossing gates are down and never going around them; never throwing anything at a train or placing objects on the tracks; and never walking across a train bridge or through a train tunnel, which are reserved for trains only.
Following the discussion, students watched the animated film “The Adventures of Sly Fox and Birdie,” which reinforced the safety rules they had just learned. Each student also received an LIRR pencil to take home as a reminder of the day's lessons.
