East Rockaway students recognized at SUNY Old Westbury STEP Program ceremony
East Rockaway High School students Isabella Gallina and Jaxon Lovingood were recognized this past Saturday at the closing ceremony and luncheon of the SUNY Old Westbury Science and Technology Entry Program (STEP). The STEP program, designed to support underrepresented students in pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, offers weekend enrichment classes, academic workshops and SAT prep, among other college-readiness resources.
Isabella Gallina was recognized by her instructors in both Geometry and Earth Science for her dedication and perseverance. Reflecting on her experience, she shared a message of resilience: “Work hard and do your best. Even if you don’t pass, keep going.” Her can-do attitude and commitment to learning stood out throughout the program.
Jaxon Lovingood also embraced the opportunity and was enthusiastic about everything STEP had to offer. “The program was fun and there is so much to learn,” he said. He encouraged more students to take part, citing the variety of experiences and the supportive learning environment.
Several other East Rockaway students also took part in the program this year. Angel Ramos Rodriguez highlighted the weekly group workshops as especially inspirational, and Austin Mullings credited the SAT Prep course with helping him boost his test scores and build confidence.
The closing ceremony featured keynote speaker Jasmine Epps, a former STEP Old Westbury student and current graduate student at the University of Buffalo. Epps is pursuing degrees in Data Analytics Engineering and Engineering Education. Her story resonated with students, who engaged in a lively Q&A session and came away inspired by her academic journey.
East Rockaway’s involvement in STEP represents an exciting step forward, opening new doors for students to explore STEM fields and prepare for success in higher education and beyond.
