Three East Rockaway Teachers Awarded Tenure at May 27 Board of Education Meeting

At the May 27 meeting of the East Rockaway Board of Education, three outstanding educators were granted tenure in recognition of their dedication, impact and excellence in the classroom. The evening was filled with heartfelt reflections from school leaders, who praised the honorees not only for their instructional expertise but also for their contributions to the school community.
Ann Kerner — Elementary teacher, Rhame Avenue School
Supervised initially as a student teacher, Ms. Ann Kerner has grown into a beloved and essential part of Rhame Avenue School. Her journey from student teaching to multiple leave replacements to a full-time teaching role has been marked by resilience, warmth and an unwavering focus on student success. Rhame principal, Mr. Jack Bixhorn, highlighted Ms. Kerner’s exceptional ability to create a welcoming classroom environment where students thrive academically and emotionally. Through engaging lessons, personalized attention and deep community involvement, including leading Safety Patrol, Math Olympiads and the Rhame Talent Show, Ms. Kerner has made an indelible mark on the school. “She truly cares,” said Bixhorn, “and her students know it.”
Emily Brostowin — Special education teacher, East Rockaway Jr./Sr. High School
Described as both humble and tenacious, Ms. Emily Brostowin has been a pillar of the special education department. ERHS Principal Richard Schaffer commended her for her strategic and flexible instructional planning across a wide variety of math courses, from algebra to financial math, and for her commitment to inclusive co-teaching. Beyond the classroom, she has advised the yearbook for three years and coached multiple middle school sports teams, all while serving as a dependable presence at school events. “She sets high expectations and does whatever it takes to help students meet them,” said Schaffer. “She is a true advocate, and we’re grateful for her.”
Fernando Gomez — World languages (Spanish), East Rockaway Jr./Sr. High School
A vibrant and welcoming presence at ERHS, Mr. Fernando Gomez has evolved from a part-time teacher to the department’s longest-serving Spanish educator. Known for his dynamic lessons, commitment to cultural authenticity and deep connections with students, Mr. Gomez has significantly expanded opportunities for language learners. Principal Schaffer noted his role in increasing participation in the NYS Seal of Biliteracy program and in launching Spanish 5 at the high school, with over 40 students enrolled for the upcoming year. Mr. Gomez also stepped up as student council advisor this past year, organizing events like “Safe Halloween,” and routinely provides a safe space for students during off periods. “His value to our school is immense,” said Schaffer. “He is a trusted adult, a skilled educator and a cultural leader.”
Congratulations to Ms. Kerner, Ms. Brostowin, and Mr. Gomez on this well-deserved milestone in their careers. Their dedication continues to shape the East Rockaway school community for the better.
