Fourth Graders Explore Native American Culture Through Hands-On Learning

On Apr. 27, fourth graders from Rhame Avenue and Centre Avenue Elementary Schools came together for a special in-school field trip hosted by Journeys Into American Indian Territory. The experience brought the authentic Native American world to life, immersing students in the culture, history and traditions of the people of the Eastern Woodlands.
Held at Centre Avenue School, students rotated through the gym, STEM lab, and art classroom, engaging in a variety of hands-on activities from crafting clay pendants and trying on animal skins to completing a symbol project and exploring a dedicated Eastern Woodlands Museum display. Throughout the day, students approached each station with enthusiasm and curiosity.
Beyond the curriculum, the event came with an added benefit. The in-school field trip directly supported fourth-grade social studies instruction while also fostering a sense of community between the two schools, giving students a valuable opportunity to connect with the peers they will soon join with as one class in middle school.
A heartfelt thank you goes to the East Rockaway Educational Foundation, whose grant made this memorable experience possible.
