East Rockaway’s elementary schools marked the 25th anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001, with two remembrance ceremonies that brought students, staff and community members together to honor those who were lost and reflect on the importance of kindness and community.

At Centre Avenue Elementary School, students gathered outside around the flagpole in the morning for a ceremony led by Principal Calia Kelly. Speaking to students and assembled parents, Kelly emphasized that the message of the day should be to lead with love.

Sixth grade representatives took turns sharing acts of kindness they planned to carry out in honor of the anniversary, offering a meaningful way for students to give back through positive actions in their own community.

Local veterans attended the ceremony, along with district administrators and Village of East Rockaway Mayor Gordon Fox. Students dressed in red, white and blue and carried handmade pennants featuring messages honoring those who lost their lives.

In the afternoon, Rhame Avenue Elementary School held its observance on the school field. Continuing a tradition that began three years ago, the student body formed a large circle and held hands, symbolizing an unbroken circle of strength and community.

At the center of the circle, students placed a paper chain they had created, with each link decorated with tributes. Interim Principal Neil Lederer spoke to students about the significance of the day, honoring those who died and expressing gratitude to the many people who helped others in the days and months that followed the attacks.

The ceremony concluded with the national anthem and enthusiastic cheers from the students.

Through both ceremonies, East Rockaway’s youngest students found their own ways to reflect on a defining moment in American history. Their messages of kindness, gratitude and honor served as a reminder that honoring the past can also shape how we care for one another today.
