Bond Construction and Facilities Update
The community made a $27 million investment in 2019 to improve facilities around the district. We have completed much of that work to date and will share our progress.

Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Update

Update on the NYS Science Learning Standards
New York State has shifted to the New York State Science Learning Standards (NYSSLS), which are based on the Next Generation Science Standards. There have been shifts to more hands- on and conceptual learning along with new tests for 5th grade, 8th grade, and eventually the Regents exams.

The district invested in a full-time literacy coach to support our elementary literacy framework and instructional approaches in the classroom to develop readers and writers.

Setting a Course for Excellence in Technology: A K-12 Continuum of Technology Expectations
The East Rockaway School District has identified specific skills and knowledge benchmarks for our students and classrooms regarding the use of instructional technology. We will share what students should know and be able to do at each grade level, and we will review how our classrooms are utilizing technology across our district.

Writers’ Workshop
Our elementary school students have been developing their writing skills through the implementation of a Writers’ Workshop model in all classrooms, grades K-6. We will share the components of this instructional model along with examples of student work. The outcomes as shown in student engagement, creativity and skill development are evidenced in their written products.

East Rockaway School District classrooms are expanding the use of academic resources with the implementation of digital text (“tech”) books in multiple subject areas and grade levels across grades 6-12. Mental Health and Wellness
New York State has mandated mental health curriculum to be implemented in all schools and the East Rockaway School District has already been focusing on addressing the mental health and wellness needs of all students. Please join us to hear about East Rockaway’s support services, professional staff, classroom and group curriculum delivery and additional resources that are proactively addressing this important topic. We will share our current programs and activities as well as information on our continuous review of student needs.

The East Rockaway High School Science Research program has provided high school students with opportunities to explore individual topics of interest through review of previous research followed by the design and implementation of independent research projects. The East Rockaway Jr./Sr. High School course offerings have expanded over the past few years to include opportunities for students to enroll in rigorous coursework leading to potential college credit earned in high school. These programs include the College Board’s Advanced Placement courses, Syracuse University’s Project Advance, and dual-credit courses through Farmingdale State College. Please join us to learn about the variety of college credit options available to East Rockaway High School students.

Eureka Math – Grades 3-5 / Stern Essay Contest Winners
Students at Centre Avenue School and Rhame Avenue School are learning math through a new program this school year: Eureka Math. This program is being implemented in grades 3-5 during the 2018-19 school year, with a plan for full implementation K-5 in 2019-20. The Eureka Math program was created for EngageNY and is the most widely used math program in the United States. Please join us to hear about the transition to this program and the exciting activities our students are engaged in through classroom lessons.

Science 21 – K-2 / PTA Reflections Winners
Please join us to hear about the exciting hands-on science lessons and activities our students in Kindergarten through grade 2 are experiencing with the new Science 21 program. The program's major emphasis is on investigations that are student directed and relevant to students' everyday lives. The program's main focus is on hands-on, inquiry-based science; math, language arts and technology are integrated at points where they fit naturally.

Universal Acceleration- Plan for Implementation/Winter Scholar Athletes
In order to provide the most appropriate and rigorous academic program for East Rockaway students, a plan for universal acceleration has been created where most students will complete high school level coursework in the areas of math and science in grade 8. This acceleration will give students greater opportunities for enrollment is advanced coursework in high school, leading to stronger preparation for college and beyond. Please join us to learn about the changes that will lead to these advanced opportunities.
