On April 11, ERHS AP Environmental Science students donned hard hats and safety vests as they prepared to get a first-hand look at the essential work taking place at the South Shore Water Reclamation Facility in Bay Park.
During the tour, the students learned about the stages of water treatment taking place at the facility, including the Biological Nutrient Removal system, which removes nitrogen from the treated water. This system helps reduce the harmful effects of algae blooms and the destruction of tidal marshes. Students also learned about the Bay Park Conveyance Project which will eventually transport the treated water underground to the Cedar Creek Water Pollution Control Plant and out through the Atlantic Ocean outflow pipe. This will further improve storm protection and quality of life in our bay.
