At the East Rockaway UFSD Board of Education meeting on Dec. 17, the district’s exterior security guards were celebrated as “Hometown Heroes” for their dedication and selflessness. The award was presented by Mr. Michael Van Wart, Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations, acknowledging their extraordinary commitment to the schools and community.
The team of six guards, who were formerly employees of West Tech Security, are now proud members of the district staff. Their journey to this recognition began in early September when the district faced an unexpected crisis.
Mr. Daly, Director of Facilities, informed Mr. Van Wart that West Tech Security, the firm contracted for exterior guard services, was on the verge of bankruptcy. The guards had not been paid in weeks, raising uncertainty about whether they would show up for work.
Determined to find a solution, Mr. Daly reached out to the guards and asked them to continue working while the district worked to resolve the situation. To the district’s relief and gratitude, every single guard agreed, despite the lack of pay and no immediate assurance of when the situation would be resolved.
A few quotes from the guards during those initial conversations reflect their dedication:
- “We would never want to put the district in a bad spot.”
- “I care too much about the kids and staff to leave.”
- “We love working in East Rockaway.”
Their trust and perseverance allowed the district the time needed to transition them into district employment. For several weeks, these guards showed up every day without pay, motivated solely by their care for the students, staff, and community.
Today, East Rockaway UFSD proudly employs all six guards as district staff, ensuring consistency and reliability in school security. Their steadfast commitment exemplifies the highest standards of service and community spirit.
The guards recognized are: Mike Baron, Walter Everett, Steven Kells, Bob LaRocco, Brian Mischke and Paul Mungioli.
These dedicated individuals provide security across the district, with one guard stationed at Centre Avenue School, one at Rhame Avenue School, and the remainder at East Rockaway Junior/Senior High School.
The district previously operated under a hybrid model, with contracted guards handling exterior posts and district employees staffing front desks. Following the bankruptcy of West Tech Security, all security personnel are now district employees, enhancing unity and efficiency across the team.
East Rockaway UFSD is deeply grateful to these Hometown Heroes for their selflessness, sacrifice, and unwavering care for the safety and well-being of the school community.
