The East Rockaway Board of Education is proud to recognize Susan Torborg as our October 2023 Hometown Hero Award honoree.

Ms. Torborg is a third generation East Rockaway resident and East Rockaway High School alum with deep roots in the community who has spent decades in service to her beloved hometown and her family, friends and neighbors.

As a high school student, she was a three-season athlete and cheerleader who participated in many extracurricular activities and was seen as a leader in her class. Recently, she rekindled that spirit as the organizer of her class reunion which saw fifty members of her class return to their alma mater for a tour, dinner and Sunday brunch.

Her service to East Rockaway schools continues to this day, having served for 17 years in various capacities, including lunch monitor, security guard, athletic supervisor, coach and most recently, as the main office clerical. In addition, she has lent her time to initiatives that benefit the community, including food, toy and clothing drives, autism awareness campaigns, East Rockaway village celebrations and volunteering at the village recreation center.

While Ms. Torborg is not one to gravitate towards the spotlight, her contributions have not gone unrecognized. She has been honored with numerous awards and recognitions, including the Nassau County Millennium Woman’s Trailblazer Award and PTA Founders Day Lifetime Membership Award.

In recognition of her extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and dedication to the East Rockaway community, the BOE is proud to bestow the Hometown Hero honor on Susan Torborg.
