At the Jan. 14 East Rockaway Board of Education meeting, Judy Fahrenkrug was celebrated as a Hometown Hero for her exceptional contributions to the district and community. Superintendent James DeTommaso presented Fahrenkrug with her award, acknowledging her dedication and selflessness over two decades of service.
Fahrenkrug has been a part of the East Rockaway school district since 2003, working as a teacher’s aide and going far beyond her job description. She has been known to provide supplies and hot meals for students in need, embodying the spirit of generosity. Additionally, she has been deeply involved in the district’s athletic programs, keeping score at volleyball games and assisting the lacrosse program. Her commitment extended to concerts, Rock Rivalry, and numerous other school events, making her a cherished presence at community gatherings.
Her impact is felt well beyond the schools. Fahrenkrug has supported Scouts, Little League and various community organizations. She was instrumental in providing aid to families affected by Superstorm Sandy, offering a steady hand during times of crisis. Even while facing her own health challenges with cancer, she has consistently prioritized the well-being of others.
Superintendent DeTommaso praised Fahrenkrug’s unwavering dedication, calling her a true inspiration to the East Rockaway community.
The BOE meeting began with senior football player Anthony Grimaldi leading the Pledge of Allegiance. Following this, administrators from Centre Avenue School, Rhame Avenue School and East Rockaway Junior/Senior High School provided an in-depth presentation on the district’s discipline policies. They highlighted the positive effects of limiting cell phone usage in schools this year, noting improvements in focus and classroom engagement. Superintendent DeTommaso also confirmed that the district will not be participating in the New York State regionalization process.
