At the March 21 meeting, the East Rockaway Board of Education was proud to recognize Michael Stern as the February 2024 Hometown Hero Award honoree. Mr. Stern’s presentation was originally scheduled for Feb. 13 but was delayed due to weather.
Michael Stern is an East Rockaway resident, graduate of East Rockaway High School and currently an employee with East Rockaway Schools with over 40 years of exceptional service to the district. Many in the district consider him the “defacto mayor.”
As a valued member of the facilities team, Mr. Stern knows East Rockaway school building inside and out better than anyone and is always ready to help. He is an invaluable asset for any event needing microphones, including Board of Education meetings and other presentations. A consummate professional, Mr. Stern is at his best under pressure and is a key member of the team that prepares for both Rock Rivalry and the district musical production, playing a role in the stage design, rehearsals and audio needs. Even during holidays and summer vacations, he is at work painstakingly preparing to ensure the schools are ready for the return of students and staff.
Following the events of September 11, 2001, Mr. Stern and his family turned their own personal tragedy into a profound learning experience and inspiration for East Rock-away students. In honor of Mike’s brother Andrew who lost his life on 9/11, the family formed the Andrew J. Stern Essay Contest and awards scholarships to three East Rockaway students every year. Mr. Stern also staged a successful campaign to rename his child-hood street Andrew J. Stern Way in memory of his brother.
In recognition of his extraordinary character, philanthropic spirit and positive contributions to the East Rockaway community, the Board of Education is proud to bestow the Hometown Hero honor on Michael Stern.
