The winners of the annual school-wide Poetry Madness competition were honored at the Board of Education meeting on May 29th.

The Poetry Madness competition, conceived by former English teacher and poetry and basketball enthusiast Ginny Sievers, challenges ERHS students to write original poems based on a chosen theme each year. The submitted poems are evaluated by judges from the English department in a tournament-style format inspired by the NCAA March Madness, starting with 64 entries and progressing through rounds to the top 32, Sweet 16, Elite 8, and the Final 4.

This year's champion was Sugar Constant with her poem “Cyanide,” and the runner-up was Kaylin Vizelter with her poem “Caffeine.”

At the Board of Education meeting, Kaylin Vizelter received enthusiastic applause after reading her poem to the attendees. Although Sugar Constant was unable to attend, a recording of her reading her winning poem was shared.

Congratulations to both winners!
