East Rockaway High School’s valedictorian and salutatorian for the Class of 2024 were recognized at the June 11th Board of Education meeting. Jordan Lu was named this year’s valedictorian and Kevin Lynch was named this year’s salutatorian.

East Rockaway High School Principal Richard Schaffer spoke to the board and the community about these two high achieving students. “What truly distinguishes Jordan is his exceptional commitment to his academic pursuits. A testament to this dedication is his involvement in our AP Italian course, which he elected to take before the regular school day even begins. This decision exemplifies Jordan's unwavering commitment to his education.” He went on to praise Lu’s leadership as president of the National Honor Society and senior class treasurer.

Mr. Schaffer also spoke of Lu’s significant commitments outside of school. He said “After school, he diligently contributes to his family's restaurant in Oceanside, shouldering considerable responsibilities. It is truly admirable how he manages these familial obligations without compromising his academic pursuits or his active involvement in our school community.”

Lu will graduate with an impressive 106.29 GPA and plans to attend Harvard University in the fall.

Following his remarks about Lu, Mr. Schaffer praised salutatorian, Kevin Lynch, who was recently awarded the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Award for excellence in math and science. Mr. Schaffer said that Lynch is “a wonderful role model to his peers and represents the values of our community.”

Kevin Lynch will graduate with a 105.97 GPA and plans to attend Hofstra University this fall.

The Board of Education meeting opened with Centre Avenue School kindergartners Aria Roohan and Michael Miller leading all attendees in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Superintendent James DeTommaso said that these young students “truly showcase what it means to be ‘Better Together.’”

Six district retirees were recognized for their service at the meeting: Joan Cavanaugh, Maureen Kelly, Lewis Licursi, Esterina Morreale, Orlando Urena and Dominick Vulpis.

Additionally, the newly selected PTA cabinets for all the schools in the district were sworn in to their new positions, and sophomore Andrew Chen was recognized for his achievements in science.
